My husband, a country boy, h.a.t.e.d. this song. I still like it, but I am sorry Anthony allowed himself to be interviewed. He should have let his art speak for itself.

As soon as this guy exploded out of nowhere I was warning people to be cautious and that received some angry feedback and then when the guy started with the "diversity is our greatest strength" stuff, I pointed it out again. It is nothing against the guy personally, but more a warning of the danger of chasing the latest fad.

His song stands on its own. Not to accuse Anthony of this, but many lousy people have made some amazing contributions to humanity. Do we toss out the art to cancel the artist? Yeah, we do if we're petulant, self-righteous d*ckheads. And why, because most of us would rather worship a hero, not emulate their heroism.

In most cases I see this as potentially a form of "ketman" as described in The Captive Mind. When it's obvious you're not a liberal, but your career demands that you gain their approval, you might find yourself saying this to throw people off your scent. Centrists are eccentric and can maybe be won over and therefore tolerated in some organizations, but anyone right of center is irredeemable. And honestly, if it gets you into positions of authority to slightly shift the conversation rightward it may be worth sucking it up and just going for it

Chris Pratt is obviously a conservative, and he has to say this exact kind of stuff too so that he can keep acting in blockbuster movies instead of being relegated to Mel Gibson and Zahler films only (who are great but are effectively quarantined from pop culture)

Deftones also released an album a few years ago that opens with the line "I reject both sides in all of this" and again I think it's because liberal music critics sniffed out that the rest of the band members weren't a part of their tribe either after their guitarist went full anti-vax (among other things). They're a band that gets rave reviews in most publications and you don't want to let that go with an audience that isn't huge but has remained steady for a long time

Of course in these two cases, these are people navigating industries with far left gatekeepers. Country has its problems but Jason Aldean just took a culture war stand and was wildly successful. If there is any place to make a stand, it's country music

It will be pretty interesting to see what the critical reception to their next album will be after Stephen Carpenter's comments.

Expand full comment

I was misremembering, the comments from Stephen Carpenter came right after Ohms was released. Yeah I'm curious how things will be received. Critics could use the departure of the bassist from Quicksand as a reason to say they lost a step as though he was a vital member

Having been ‘round some very famous people, one learns there’s no more destructive a force than fame. More so than the pain he sings about. Ya can’t have it both ways. If you want out, you can get out. Many have. Just say no and goodbye…but he won’t. Cause posting your song “trumps” singing it to the dogs and the trees.

the song is kitsch. I guess i'm happy to have my negative feelings about it retrospectively justified

That's not quite what he said. I see it as stating the truth (although Oliver probably doesn't see it) that many outside of conservatism/Republicans don't even release they really do align more with Republicans/conservatives because they agree with the basic principles.. But they've been brain washed into "Reps=bad".

He is just a man. He may not know how to react. We don’t know his full story. I think we conservatives just get geeked out when someone puts our feelings in to a song. I’m old enough to remember when different races and political views could be accepting despite our differences.

Cut Oliver Anthony some slack here.

His views are clearly stated in his song, and they have the potential to raise awareness and unify the public.

He is right to criticize the GOP-Neocon-World-Government Establishment hacks out on that debate stage ---- as they are NOT for the people, and directly help to protect the Election Fraud, Joe Biden's regime, and even vote for his bankrupt agenda -- which is also leading us to World War III itself.

The GOP is not America First

Fox News is not America First

Only the MAGA movement is America First, and that is something very, very separate from the GPO Establishment and these Rich Men north of Richmond.

im conservative (no republican) and i didnt think of the song as political except to say that he was speaking for all working people as well as poor and that ALL ESTABLISHMENT across the globe dont give a damn about anyone except themselves and power/money. WE NEED TO STOP FIGHTING EACHOTHER AND LET A SONG LIKE THIS BRING US TOGETHER TO FIGHT THE PEOPLE THAT WANT US DEAD

How on Earth wasn't it political? It talked about inflation, taxes, welfare, and Epstein island. People are really kidding themselves with this stuff.

The way you state that you are a conservative, but not republican is the best way to describe the top vs bottom politics.

I'm pretty conservative as well, conserve the value of sound money, conserve the ecological aspects of our world(not CO2 bullshit, East Palestine train wreck instead), and conserve all cultures. I think a lot of people who are liberal, but not Liberal, have a lot in common with conservative people.

This digital information/social media/propaganda age has destroyed our communities. We will need to get rid of these phones and unite over food and energy production in order to win this war. I'm on a terminal, not a device that follows me everywhere learning everything about who I am, in order to control me like 'Truman'. They only get a 1/10th of the knowledge from a terminal without a mic, that a phone gets

The term I've heard used is "Classical Liberal" as opposed to "Liberal". Ben Shapiro uses "Leftist" - he distinguishes the two: liberal, which is old school and leftist, which is "new school", so to speak. I do use the word leftist often, but I don't use the word liberal, as it's still considered a reference to current Democrats, overall.

Today's left in the US does not want common ground. Their want their ground to be the only ground.

This used to be true, but the left has changed and are now actively against the right and what is right and true and good in this country and world.

If "The Man" was scared by a fucking song, we'd all be instantly cancelled for writing on this community message board. It's a song in the Woody Guthrie and Billy Bragg tradition. Catchy, too.

Trump gave us:

1) Shilling for the Platinum Plan

2) Shilling for Israel

3) Promised "American Dream Plan" (amnesty) for Hispanics

4) No wall

5) No insurrection act during the George Floyd riots

6) No ban on H1BS which he promised after using laid off tech workers as props for campaign rallies

7) No convictions of Hillary Clinton or any of the democrats who are convicting him now

8) No "stop the steal" despite a massive grift, shaking his supporters upside down for any spare change to fuel his legal defense

Yet your main problem is with just some random country singer who cucked to the media after he made it big overnight with lyrics that resonated with white America His personal politics and wanting to distance himself from MAGA matter far less than the actual song itself and the fact that it went viral due to strongly resonating with middle America for giving elites the finger.

Because he didn't join MAGA and shamelessly shill a man who constantly betrayed his own supporters is what we need to focus on, not the actual failed promises of people in power like Trump. This is why so many figures on the right are considered nerds and above all losers who normal people do not want to associate with. You are focused on the completely wrong problem here. We will start winning by actually holding grifters to account who promised us real, tangible victories, not by obsessing over one guy with a good song failing to join a political grift.

Have fun with another 4 years of no wall, exploding crime, subservience to Jared Kushner, pandering to everyone except white people, and meaningless empty threats on twitter.

He's never going to win again btw. You're delusional if you think otherwise. But thanks for admitting that you support a president with anti white policies, but hey only personality matters I guess.

He probably won't win because he doesn't count the votes, and that's all the really matters. See 2020 election...

"Subservience to Jared Kushner"...what the heck are you talking about? It's not about personality, it's about righting a wrong and defending a great president (at least much better than all of them since Reagan) from being attacked. That being said, I'll probably vote for DeSantis because I think he has a better chance at winning in the general election. He has to get his sh1( together though, because he's been off his game lately - too much on the defensive.

Under Trump: 500 miles of the wall was built either anew or replacing old chain link. We have our embassy in Jerusalem in Israel, finally, after all presidents since Carter said they'd do that. A beginning over-haul of the ACA (Obamacare) just about passed into law but it was stopped in the Senate BY ONE VOTE: John McCain. He didn't use laid off workers as "props", He should've prosecuted rioters (some were actual domestic terrorists) but the Dems would've impeached him over it (he should've done it anyway, when local and state AG's went easy on the rioters). His administration had Dems in it who were a part of the "resistance" and so they actively went against him. He didn't "turn supporters upside down......" - Democrats are a gazillion times more aggressive with getting every penny out of pockets for donations. He should've curbed HB visas but at least he did the Remain in Mexico policy!

You are already negated and you are oblivious to it. I'm not even 5% describable by your flippant labels; and I'm certainly no member of any limpwristed factions or clubs to which you belong. But people like I (and maybe like Oliver Anthony) soon will be on the front lines giving their literal blood to revive what's left of a peaceful existence for our families and friends. You, I'm guessing, will be doing your part online, handing out really encouraging platitudes. No thanks, I'll just flood my headphones with some Oliver Anthony instead. You can just stay well armored behind your bookmarked Wikipedia pages of the Constitution or GOP platform flash cards or whatever other flimsy derivation of "Christian values" makes you feel like a worthy contributor.

Your line about how it should be easy enough to just admit he's pandering to or at least writing from the perspective of the right really hits home. Because insisting he isn't just comes off as lying. Like when Chris Ray Gun declared he never actually cared about politics after building his career off of taking strong political stances. I can't stand someone lying to me as if they think I was just completely stupid.

Just say it. He hates the right because MSNBC told him to, but he's smart enough to be terrified of the left.

I think some conservatives are hung up on the fact the song has a plaintive tone and is not triumphalist. Narcissists hate that. Much ado about nothing. Stop obsessing over small things. This is a win. Songs exist to evoke emotion...if they fail at that it makes no difference what else they do. Ted Nugent never wrote such a song. This one works and it isn't championing the cabal's agenda.

This appears to be written by a guy who has analyzed the analysis so long he can't understand how a normal person might think about a song. Oliver Anthony seems well-adjusted in his quotes. There is a pack of jackals chasing him now...Owen Benjamin among them...out of jealousy at his instant success.
